COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community Action Services and Food Bank in Provo reported a 9% increase in people seeking food assistance from 2023 to 2024 after a statewide food drive collected more than 92,000 pounds on March 15. The nonprofit said that federal funding delays now threaten key programs—such as housing assistance and local food purchasing—and it is launching new fundraising efforts.  Daily Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Springville police arrested Darryl Ashby and Ernesto Munoz after a fraud investigation that began on March 24 led to a search of an apartment where officers seized stolen mail, fake IDs, and a forged check for nearly $50,000—plus a small amount of meth—from a scene linked to a reported purse theft.  KUTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Utah County Commission approved boundary maps for three new school districts on Tuesday night. The maps split the Alpine School District into three sections—Lake Mountain West, Central and Timpanogos South—and will fully replace it for the 2027-2028 school year while current school placements remain unchanged.  ABC4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Spencer Cox signed 100 bills Wednesday that cut the income tax rate from 4.55% to 4.5%—saving families money at a $127 million cost—and reformed vote-by-mail so voters must opt in by 2029. He also approved a law to protect children online with age checks for app downloads and passed a public safety agreement that requires Salt Lake City to sign a contract with the state.  Deseret News
  • Gov. Spencer Cox signed Utah’s App Store Accountability Act that requires app stores to verify users’ age and secure parental consent before minors download apps. The law—set to take effect on May 6, 2026—seeks to protect children and may prompt legal challenges from major tech companies.  Deseret News
  • Utah lawmakers passed several bills to regulate artificial intelligence—these laws set rules to protect mental health chatbots from misusing sensitive data, require police to say when AI helps write reports, and ban deepfake impersonation using a person’s image without permission. Most measures will take effect on May 7 and the state office for AI policy was extended until July 2027 while some provisions still await the governor’s signature.  Standard-Examiner
  • Senators John Curtis and Mike Lee introduced a bill on March 27th to start a study to see if the Bonneville Shoreline Trail qualifies as a National Scenic Trail. The study will look at the 280-mile trail from the Utah-Idaho border to Nephi and may lead to federal funding—supporting its preservation and public use.  Deseret News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Recent CDC data showed a national drop in opioid deaths, but Utah still faces a threat from synthetic opioids. In Utah, fentanyl—one of the most potent opioids—remains the leading cause of opioid fatalities as deaths rose from 492 to 503, and officials warn that drug trafficking may reverse progress.  Deseret News
