- ➤ Alan Gerbert of Millville retired recently and his wife Jill posted a social media video that went viral—showing his aging Geo Metro, bought in 1991, remains his reliable ride. The video earned over 400,000 likes as locals admired his long-lasting car and his plans to keep it for a few more years. FOX 13
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police in Washington City identified two teenage girls—17-year-old Abigael Paige Flanagan and 16-year-old Mihaela Gabriela Sorescu—as persons of interest in connection with the death of a 47-year-old woman found stabbed in a southern Utah vacation home after the teens visited local parks and left for California on Sunday, and police stated they are not considered suspects. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Water levels at Great Salt Lake’s southern arm were one foot lower than last year while the northern arm shows more water, and officials expect a boost from extra snow and a coming storm. Today, state officials announced a 50 million dollar grant was unfrozen to fund water leasing and habitat projects—plans will soon be made to use one part for water transfers and the rest for improving habitats for birds. - ➤ Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed SB73 that now requires ballot initiative backers to include detailed funding plans and state if a new tax is needed. Lawmakers set a delayed provision to apply extra publication rules starting Jan. 1 — an estimated cost increase of about $1.4 million, which critics say makes it harder for voters to propose new laws. - ➤ The FAA announced new air traffic control safety technology at Salt Lake City International, Ogden-Hinckley, and Provo Municipal airports as part of its two-year Surface Safety Portfolio aimed at reducing runway incursions. The Runway Incursion Device will be installed at Salt Lake City and Ogden-Hinckley by the end of fall 2026 — while Approach Runway Verification technology at Provo does not yet have a set timeline. - ➤ The top chiefs of staff at the Utah Capitol earned over $300,000 in 2024 after they received more than $100,000 in raises over five years, outpacing their counterparts in larger states. Legislative leaders said the increases were needed to manage a wide range of duties in a tight labor market. Deseret News
- ➤ Utah Gov. Spencer Cox vetoed a legislative bill on Tuesday that would have allowed him to choose the state Supreme Court's chief justice—lawmakers may pursue a special session to override his decision. Deseret News
