Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of March.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sarah Young, chief of staff at the state board of education, said her office partnered with Provo-born Qualtrics in 2018 to gather new data from teachers, parents and students to look beyond test scores in K-12 education. The board will use the data to shape school policies and improve teacher support+wellbeing.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Spencer Cox will sign bills that replace the State Records Committee with an administrative law judge — a change meant to speed up government records decisions; another bill will make it costlier to appeal a denial of records. Senator Mike McKell said reviews found the current process to be slow and inconsistent, prompting these changes.  Deseret News
  • Utah GOP Chair Rob Axson announced he will seek a second term while former gubernatorial candidate Phil Lyman challenges him by proposing changes to signature practices and grassroots outreach. The decision will affect how the party raises funds and supports candidates in future campaigns.  Deseret News
  • The Utah Supreme Court ruled against seven teens who sued over fossil fuel policies, saying the state's energy rules do not stop fossil fuel development — and left open the chance for the teens to refile if they fix their complaint. The decision rejected their claim that the practices harm their health and violate their right to life.  FOX 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry (41) became the first woman and African leader elected president of the International Olympic Committee on March 20th at Costa Navarino. She will begin her eight-year term in June when former president Thomas Bach’s tenure ends (June 23) and is set to guide plans for Utah’s 2034 Winter Games.  Deseret News
  • Ridgeline’s Emilee Skinner was named the Deseret News Ms. Basketball for the second year, making her only the second repeat winner in 31 years—she led her team to three state championships and will attend Duke to chase her dream of playing in the WNBA.  Deseret News
  • BYU tight end Carsen Ryan transferred from UCLA and Utah to get more playing time after Utah changed its offensive coordinator. He said that climbing the death stairs is his only tough part while he learns BYU’s playbook+ earns praise from coaches.  Deseret News
  • Former BYU coach Steve Cleveland recounted his NCAA Tournament experiences and advised coach Kevin Young that extra passes could be key to the Cougars' game. He recalled a loss to Cincinnati and stressed that lessons from past games will help the team in their Thursday contest against VCU in Denver—underscoring the need for teamwork.  Deseret News
