EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Sen. Lincoln Fillmore signed a bill that bans cellphones, smart watches, and similar devices during classroom hours in public schools starting next school year—teachers may allow them for safety or learning reasons. He said the law will help students spend more time talking and playing in the real world and keep distractions in check.  Deseret News

  • BYU earned a 6 seed in the East Region and will play VCU in the round of 64 on Thursday in Denver—marking their 32nd NCAA Tournament appearance under first-year coach Kevin Young.  Deseret News
  • Weber State softball did not win a game at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga — weather delays led to cancellations and losses — and the team will play at Utah Valley on Monday before hosting San Diego on March 21.  Standard-Examiner
