COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Provo earned gold-level bicycle-friendly status by the League of American Bicyclists after spending over $21 million on bike infrastructure since 2020. Mayor Judkins said the city plans to invest another $46 million over the next five years to enhance cycling safety and connectivity. Deseret News
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Intermountain Health announced plans to freeze its pension program, affecting a third of its 68,000 employees due to financial pressures like lower government payments and inflation. Benefits earned up to the freeze date (Dec. 31) will be safeguarded and redirected toward a 401(k) contribution increase and additional retirement services. Deseret News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Timpanogos School Board appointed Joseph N. Jensen as the new superintendent on Wednesday, Jan. 28 in Lindon, Orem, Pleasant Grove and Vineyard. Jensen—who served as principal at Timpanogos High—will visit all 29 schools in his first 100 days to connect with staff, parents and administrators. Daily Herald
- ➤ Three new Utah County school districts have named superintendents after voters approved splitting the current district in 2024. Dr Joel Perkins, Dr Vicki Carter, and Dr Joseph N Jensen will lead Aspen Peaks, Lake Mountain, and Timpanogos, which will begin operations in July 2027. KUTV
- ➤ BYU has launched the Cougar Pell Promise program to help low-income students pay the rest of their tuition — covering aid for up to eight semesters. High school seniors must apply by Feb. 1 and complete annual FAFSA and scholarship applications to keep the funding. Deseret News

- ➤ Utah drivers pay 39 cents per gallon in gas tax, the highest in the Mountain West, and legislators are considering a shift to refineries to ease costs. The tax generated $246 million last fiscal year even as the state operates five large refineries. FOX 13
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A poll of 799 registered voters in Utah conducted Jan. 7-12 shows that nearly 6 in 10 support allowing doctors to help end a terminally ill patient's life, with agnostic or other voters showing highest support and Latter-day Saints opposing.
