BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Crumbl officials confirmed on Thu, Jan. 15 that the dessert chain is testing doughnuts for a menu expansion (known for its large cookies with rotating flavors) while no launch date is set. KUTV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Utah State Board of Education debated proposals to cut millions from public schools, including mental health programs, after lawmakers mandated a 5% budget reduction. The board will deliver its recommendation today after receiving strong feedback from parents and educators. KUTV
- ➤ A new report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center shows that community college enrollment increased (3% since 2023) while overall postsecondary enrollment grew slightly and computer and information science programs declined, with Utah colleges continuing to welcome many students. - ➤ State education officials proposed cuts of about $23 million for programs (including mental health supports, pre-K, and homeschooling grants) that many families depend on, and the legislature will decide on their funding Wednesday, Jan. 21. FOX 13
- ➤ UVU president Astrid S. Tuminez announced on Wednesday she will step down to focus on family; her resignation takes effect May 1, 2026. A presidential transition team will help the university find her successor & support its near-term priorities. KUTV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The water district is moving a 1.1-mile pipeline at the mouth of Provo Canyon out of danger from landslides and quakes; work began last spring and will finish in early 2027. The project includes a 1,013-ft tunnel (built under Orchard North) to bring safe water to 1.6 million people. Daily Herald
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Intermountain Health said its RSV vaccination campaign, launched after the vaccine's 2023 approval, has reduced infant hospitalizations from 1 in 48 to 1 in 400. The program urges immunization for pregnant mothers and newborns to safeguard babies in the community (RSV is easier to prevent than treat). Deseret News
